Hi folks,
I just heard that my husband Derrick has sent an article to Barometer
this morning but not sure if they will publish it. I still want share
this article with you all.
Here Derrick says "as the view of an American who knows many Chinese, is
married to a Chinese and spent a summer traveling to various parts of
China and is disappointed that Americans are avoiding coming to terms
with our own messes by finding fault in other nations".

Only Switzerland Fit to Host Olympic Games
It is easy for us Americans to hurl stones of righteous
indignation at the human rights abuses of other nations; we after all do
not live in a glass house. Surely our history is not replete with
genocides (Native Americans), forced servitude (African-Americans),
religious intolerance (Church of the Latter Day Saints), denial of
voting and property rights (women and African Americans), forced
relocation and internment (Japanese-Americans), political repression
(Pullman strike and Palmer Raids) or morally conscionable occupation and
annexation of other sovereign nations (Hawaii) or territories there of
(Mexico). Certainly there is no modern equivalent, or any reason to give
our hands serious inspection for the slightest taint of blood.
Baring in mind our purity and the quaint document that is The
Fundamental Principles of the Olympic Charter, it would seem that only
the Unites States, Switzerland and maybe Canada are fit to host any
Olympic Games.
Departing from the preceding Swiftian sarcasm; I'm certain that
Ms. Montgomery already has a rudimentary understanding of American
history, what she is lacking is a more insightful prospective of Modern
Chinese history. Ms. Montgomery laments the PRC's plan to run the
Olympic torch through both Tibet and Taiwan as part of a domestic route,
perhaps suggesting an irony or hypocrisy where there is none. Both are
provincial territories of the PRC.
At the time of the re-unification of Tibet with Greater China -
October 1950 - the United States and Great Britain had already
recognized China's claim of sovereignty during the regime of
Generalissimo Chaing Kai-Sek and the GMT. In essence the "invasion" of
Tibet was little more than reclamation.
The "independence" of Taiwan in 1949 came at the expense of
Formosan lives and mainland treasure. Both the PRC and Taiwan observe a
One China policy, (a fact recognized in Taiwan's founding Constitution),
their only disagreement is over who runs the One China. Both the
Generalissimo and his son (free elections did not come to Taiwan until
1987) had pledged to re-unite China much in the same terms that Ms.
Montgomery has expressed the mainland's rumored desires to do the same.
Human rights violations are deplorable, but one need not travel
thousands of miles to bare witness or draw world attention when a quick
trip by speed boat 90 miles south of Florida to a spot of land leased
indefinitely by the US would suffice.
I hope Ms. Montgomery will visit the PRC some time soon and see
the reality of China for herself rather than rely on the filter of a
biased media. I am confident that she will see, just as I have, that
the first signs of a thousand flowers blooming (Bai Hua Qi Fang) has
begun. Let us hope that when they do, our own garden is not over run
with weeds from a lack of self vigilant attendance.

Hi All,
This just reminded me ten years ago, when NBC
commentator Bob Costas made biased comments on Chinese
athletes at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta
Olympics, the Chinese community in the US was
mobilized to protest Costa's comments. This eventually
effected NBC's formal apology. Here is a link to the

Dear CAOSU members,
I understand your patriot views on this issue. As the first amendment
to
the constitution, the bills of right". The writer for Daily Barometer
has
the right to express her view on the human right issue. I support
President's view about posting CAOSU's view on the Daily Barometer to
counter her argument. But lets be educated and thoughtful about our
response first and respond in a gentle way. After all, your comments on
the
mail list is way too angry.
The human right issue in China is a big issue with our country right now
and
Westerners do have their view regarding this issue. But we have a
different
perspective due to our life experience in China. Regardless of which
side
you take, Olympics should be pure sports not a political issue. I think
that should be our arguments on this topic.
Let your opinions to be heard, not angers to be heard.
