Hi, everyone:

In my opinion, we should avoid calling names or labelling her as anything.
That will not help us. We may write a response to the Montgomery editorial and
hope to publish it in next week's Daily Barometer. The main purpose of our
response should be "correcting her mistakes" (straigtening some facts), not
criticizing/attacking her personally. For example, we may say: (1) Tibet was
liberated peacefully in
1950--there was no burning of temples at that time. The current Dalai Lama
himself went to Beijing to meet the national leaders such as premier Zhou
and Chairman Mao, he admitted that Tibet was part of China. Tibet has been part
of China since the Yuan Dynasty (1300s). The Dalai Lama was approved by the
Chinese central government, the ceremony for him to become Dalai Lama was
presided
by the delegate of the then central government. The uprising occurred in Tibet
in 1959 was added by some foreign governments in an attempt to split China; of
course the Chinese central government did not allow that to happen. The same
with Taiwan--it has been part of China since the Han dynasty (around 2nd
century?), the current situation (separtion) was a result of a civil war.
President Lincoln is
regarded as the greatest president in US history because he kept the country
intact. The same thinking and mentality (highest regard for national
sovereignty and integrity) exist in other countries including China.  (2) As
for
capital punishment (death penalty), different countries has different
standards. Most U. S. states have death penalty. Many were executed in Texas
too.
China has a population of 1.3 billion (5 times of the US population), but the
number of people being murdered each year are far fewer than that in US. Maybe
the harsher punishment deters murder and other crimes, thus saves many innocent
lives, who knows! (3) We are aware that there are truth in Ms Montgomery's
editorial, there are lots to be improved in China. However, China has made
great progress in opening to the world and embracing the market economy, hence
allows more personal freedom.
Finally, we suggest that people should check facts before they put their
writings in front of public eyes!

I suggest that our Chinese Student Association coordinates the
writing of this response, and hope some fellow Chinese who study liberal arts to
take the lead in writing. I am a biologist and I know little of history and
political science;
so the above is only my 5 cents suggestion.
   Take care!
   XW
